Unseen Power of the Picket Fence

So, I suppose I owe an explanation as to why the posts have gotten so sporadic.

Last May, the Lady and I had a daughter.  She's a lot more mobile now, and more interesting than when she just sat and slept and pooped and ate.  Not that I don't find great interest and satisfaction in blogging, but, well, it just doesn't compare to having a kid around to play with and teach things and all.  If ever I have to choose between blogging and spending a minute with the Countess, well, that's no choice at all.

Now, you might be thinking, "But LD, you watch a ton of movies, and in a post or two you'll tell us that you've watched 127 episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent since January.  You can't tell us that blogging and hanging out with your kid is an 'either/or' quandary.  You can post if you make the effort."  And you would be right, or at least partly right.  It's true, I do have free time outside of work, and the little one goes to bed relatively early, leaving me with a good amount of time in the evening during which I could be blogging.  Truth is that the Lady, for the last couple of years, is a freelance writer.  And considering that having the Countess rambling around affected her daily routine quite a bit more than mine, she really had a good reason to use the computer once the little one went to bed.  If the choice is between the Lady using the computer and getting paid for it, and me blogging and not getting paid for it, there's no choice at all.

I'm not shutting down the blog.  And I am going to try to post more frequently.  I might be able to do just that too (we have 2 computers now).  So don't give up just yet.

And one last note: yes, that picture with the mustache below is me.  And it was real.  The beard lasted about 2 1/2 months.  It was getting too hot and I was getting odd looks from people at my real job.  It had to go.  I should've kept the 'stache longer though.

Something I learned from ESPN today...

A Note on Comments

I noticed a big influx of spam comments this afternoon, deleted a bunch of them, changed the setup to moderated comments and added a word verification to comments. That kind of sucks, I think. I always appreciated having this an open forum. But when a post on Kirby Puckett from 18 months ago ened up with a dozen porn spam comments, I figured I had to do something.

If I haven't done this before, here's my mission statement on comments:

I will never delete a comment unless it's solicitation or beyond the pale (and I reserve the right to determine what that is).

I won't delete a comment, ever, just because the commenter disagrees with me or points out that I'm wrong about something (if the commenter does so outside decorum, different story).

If you want to blogwhore, post a comment that's at least slightly relevant - because I'm wont to delete comments that even kind of look like solicitation. Or, in the alternative, email me at the address above - I'll be much more likely to link to you or post it if you take some effort. Also: my blog is read by, like, 3 people; you're probably better off whoring elsewhere.

I might turn off the moderation if I get annoyed by it or if spammers are blocked by the verification system. If I haven't moderated a comment in a while and you're just dying to let me know something, email me and I'll get on it.

Sorry about this. Blame offshore betting sites, fake college degrees, and porn for it.

Might be time I dusted off the cobwebs...

Changes Afoot!

So I kind of was screwing around with some widgets and accidentally moved to a new blogger template. And because of that I've spent most of the day trying to either (a) go back to the old ways, or (b) make this look presentable because I'm unable to go back. I'm stuck with method (b) though I'm not sure I've made it look presentable. Please let me know if this new setup burns the eyes, or if I can improve it someway. Also, let me know if I missed a link on the blogroll. I thought I caught them all, but I had to retype them all, so who knows if I missed something.

Commenting - that's been a problem. I tried to reload Haloscan using their "new blogger tool" about 7 times, and each time I lost all of my posts, even in the archives. I personally prefer the new window popup for comments via haloscan, but I'm not pissing away 650 posts to re-add it. So basically, you're stuck with Blogger comments until I can figure out how to fix that.

One last thing... As many of you may know, I am wont to eschew brevity. I tend to have these long ass posts that take up half the front page. Not anymore! I've added a widget that provides the peekaboo system. So when I write something too long, most of it'll hide behind the "read more" thing. Let's try! When the post gets long, you can just click the "read more" thing below (go ahead, click it!)

And the rest of the post is here.

Feedback is appreciated. And let me know if anyone knows how to fix the comment thing.

Blogroll Updated

I added and moved around a whole bunch of links. Lots more reference sites, and a host of sports blogs added.

I deleted some blogs as well. Some have been inactive for a while, others I know have moved on to SB Nation or AOL Fanhouse sites. If I deleted your link and you want it back, email me at the address in the upper right corner and I'll add it back.

As always, the fact that I link to other sites on the blogroll does not necessarily mean that I agree with everything that's written on that site.

The blogroll's purpose is first and foremost for my ease of navigating to sources I seek out frequently. A secondary purpose is to direct readers there.

If you want me to add you as a link, feel free to email me the address and I'll have a look at it. Fair warning: I won't be linking to sites simply as advertisement or to gambling sites.
